Book Description
What is it like to grow old? Only the elderly can tell you. John Doyle is 88. What is it like to live in an elderly retirement community. Only one who lives there can tell you. John Doyle does. These are questions of great interest to some 37 million people in the U.S. over 75 and many times that number of children and grandchildren. The latter may be stunned to learn what kind of life their beloved parents and grandparents are experiencing. These questions are answered in "Tales from the Tail End," which factually and often humorously describes the aging process in a retirement community and considers how to deal with it gracefully. The author's former pastor, Father Jim Hawker, says this about the book, "I just couldn't put it down. John Doyle shares a memorable story replete with fascinating experiences and personal insights. His humor and pathos are truly infectious. The message of "'Tales from the Tail End'" is both intriguing and inspiring as the author invites the reader to come along and catch the spirit of the ups and downs of the aging process."

Book Description
Misty was ecstatic to see her owner but to the nurse’s surprise her owner just stood there and said, ‘What have you done with my dog’s head?’ ‘I’m sorry,’ replied the nurse, ‘what do you mean? She’s just been in for spaying.’ ‘That isn’t my dog’s head. The rest of it is my dog but you’ve put a different head on it.’ On a crisp October morning in 1996, Emma Milne started her first job as a newly qualified vet, a career captured on camera for eleven series of television’s Vets in Practice. Now she tells the full story. We discover the numerous things that can get stuck in an animal’s stomach, how to stop a cow exploding, and – the biggest truth of all – that animals are easy to deal with in comparison to their owners. Words from Within

Words from Within PDF Author: Jay F. Downs
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1475930127
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 480

Book Description
WORDS FROM WITHIN is a collection of poetry -- simple verse and some prose -- written over a period of forty-eight years. It is separated into six different themes -- Words of Love, Joy, Despair, Wisdom, Faith, and Prose -- although some could be interchanged easily and most are strongly Christian-oriented in their subject matter -- to both challenge and inspire. The most gracious comments one could receive about the early poems came from Rosa Zagnoni Marinoni, the Poet Laureate of Arkansas, who wrote, "Your poetry has gentleness and strength -- it is most sincere and heart-felt," and a young lady who said, "You seem to be able to say what men since Adam have been trying to say in a manner in which changing the poem would destroy it." Different personal moods and thoughts are expressed as they evolved throughout the years, so a wide range of feelings is touched upon here. Hopefully one will touch you.

Fairy Tales from Before Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales from Before Fairy Tales PDF Author: Jan M. Ziolkowski
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472025228
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
When did fairy tales begin? What qualifies as a fairy tale? Is a true fairy tale oral or literary? Or is a fairy tale determined not by style but by content? To answer these and other questions, Jan M. Ziolkowski not only provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical debates about fairy tale origins but includes an extensive discussion of the relationship of the fairy tale to both the written and oral sources. Ziolkowski offers interpretations of a sampling of the tales in order to sketch the complex connections that existed in the Middle Ages between oral folktales and their written equivalents, the variety of uses to which the writers applied the stories, and the diverse relationships between the medieval texts and the expressions of the same tales in the "classic" fairy tale collections of the nineteenth century. In so doing, Ziolkowski explores stories that survive in both versions associated with, on the one hand, such standards of the nineteenth-century fairy tale as the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Carlo Collodi and, on the other, medieval Latin, demonstrating that the literary fairy tale owes a great debt to the Latin literature of the medieval period. Jan M. Ziolkowski is the Arthur Kingsley Porter Professor of Medieval Latin at Harvard University.
