Book Description
Rhythm is one of the most important components of our survival and well-being. It governs the patterns of our sleep and respiration and is profoundly tied to our relationships with friends and family. But what happens when these rhythms are disrupted by traumatic events? Can balance be restored, and if so, how? What insights do eastern, natural, and modern western healing traditions have to offer, and how can practitioners put these lessons to use? Is it possible to do this in a way that's culturally sensitive, multidisciplinary, and grounded in research? Clients walk through the door with chronic physical and mental health problems as a result of traumatic events—how can clinicians make quick and skillful connection with their clients' needs and offer integrative mind/body methods they can rely upon? Rhythms of Recovery not only examines these questions, it also answers them, and provides clinicians with effective, time-tested tools for alleviating the destabilizing effects of traumatic events. For practitioners and students interested in integrating the insights of complementary/alternative medicine and 21st-century science, this deeply appealing book is an ideal guide. Rhythms of Recovery provides 10 continuing education units through the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselor Education Home study program (exam required): http://www.mamhca.org/lmhcs/home-study-program/

ISBN: 1784503975
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
Combining rhythmic music and movement with cognitive reflection and mindfulness, this comprehensive handbook shows how drumming and other rhythm-based exercises can have a powerful effect in individual, group and family settings. Incorporating the latest research on how rhythmic music impacts the brain, this book features over 100 different exercises spanning five key developmental areas: social and emotional learning; identity and culture; strengths and virtues; health and wellbeing; and families, teams and communities. It offers a safe entry to cognitive reflection through fun, experiential rhythmic exercises and is useful for working in settings such as school, child and adolescent counselling settings, mental health and drug and alcohol interventions, trauma counselling and relational counselling. Important sections on the use of metaphor and analogy show how to reinforce experiential outcomes. The book also contains helpful sections on working with specific populations, key facilitation skills and managing challenging behaviours. Downloadable resources such as evaluation forms, certificates and 52 session cards optimise the process of implementing this approach in practice.

Rhythms of Recovery

Book Description
Rhythms of Recovery: Trauma, Nature and the Body, is a creative, scholarly dissertation about Post Traumatic Stress. Written from a holistic, cross-cultural, ecological, feminist paradigm, the core of the dissertation is a clinical handbook which reviews and integrates conventional and innovative approaches to assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Concepts of rhythm are explored in philosophical, psychophysiological and geobiological context. Approaches to clinical praxis are informed by psychology, medical anthropology, history of medicine and conventional and traditional healing systems. the author's perspectives arise out of heuristic inquiry, including state-specific research on healing. A synthesis of theory and practice are presented including theory and methods of touch, (with an analysis of the taboo of touch) and the author's concept of Somatic Empathy; the psychobiological, subtle energy field substrate of interpersonal empathy and healing. the text includes a thematic analysis of cultural and socio-political categories of illness and healing and integrates ancient myths to illuminate present categories of interpretation. Matching textual form to theoretical content, which stresses the multi-vocality of illness and healing in the context of culture, the author integrates her creative prose to complement her scholarship.

Self-Tracking, Health and Medicine

Self-Tracking, Health and Medicine PDF Author: Deborah Lupton
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351609602
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 118

Book Description
Self-tracking practices are part of many health and medical domains. The introduction of digital technologies such as smartphones, tablet computers, apps, social media platforms, dedicated patient support sites and wireless devices for medical monitoring has contributed to the expansion of opportunities for people to engage in self-tracking of their bodies and health and illness states. The contributors to this book cover a range of self-tracking techniques, contexts and geographical locations: fitness tracking using the wearable Fitbit device in the UK; English adolescent girls’ use of health and fitness apps; stress and recovery monitoring software and devices in a group of healthy Finns; self-monitoring by young Australian illicit drug users; an Italian diabetes self-care program using an app and web-based software; and ‘show-and-tell’ videos uploaded to the Quantified Self website about people’s experiences of self-tracking. Major themes running across the collection include the emphasis on self-responsibility and self-management on which self-tracking rationales and devices tend to rely; the biopedagogical function of self-tracking (teaching people about how to be both healthy and productive biocitizens); and the reproduction of social norms and moral meanings concerning health states and embodiment (good health can be achieved through self-tracking, while illness can be avoided or better managed). This book was originally published as a special issue of the Health Sociology Review.
