Book Description
Excerpt from When the Tide Turned: The American Attack at Chateau Thierry and Belleau Wood in the First Week of June, 1918 These are soul-stirring days. To live through them is a glory and a solemn joy. The words of the poet resound in our hearts: "God's in His heaven, all's well with the world." Events have shaped themselves in accordance with the eternal law. Once again the fundamental lesson of all history is borne in upon the world, that evil - though it may seem to triumph for a while - carries within it the seed of its own dissolution. Once again it is revealed to us that the God-inspired soul of man is unconquerable and that the power, however formidable, which challenges it is doomed to go down in defeat. A righteous cause will not only stand unshaken through trials and discomfiture, but it will draw strength from the very set-backs which it may suffer. A wrongful cause can only stand as long as it is buoyed up by success. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The United States Army Second Division Northwest of Chateau Thierry in World War I

The United States Army Second Division Northwest of Chateau Thierry in World War I PDF Author: John W. Thomason, Jr.
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476611467
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
In 1927, at the request of his superiors, John W. Thomason, Jr., set out to chronicle the history of the U.S. Army 2nd Division, particularly during the bloody action of 1918. A proven writer with a solid military background through his service in the Marine Corps and at thta time two successful books under his belt, Thomason was a natural choice to write this important document. The project ran into trouble, however, when Thomason made unflattering discoveries regarding command decisions of both Army and Marine officers. His subsequent removal from the project (at his own request) left the document permanently incomplete. Here is Thomason’s manuscript, faithfully reproduced. The work of editor George Clark is deliberately limited to matters of spelling and consistency, with Clark’s comments (clearly set apart from Thomason’s work) present only when necessary for clarification. Clark also includes a short biography of Thomason and a brief historical sketch of the 2nd Division to place the action within the framework of the war as a whole. Illustrations include Thomason’s own maps and drawings originally intended to accompany the work.

Book Description
"When the United States declared war on Germany, a thrill went through the Marine Corps, for we were fighting men all and we learned that Marines were to be rushed over to France to take their stand on the Frontier of Liberty beside the battle-scarred veterans of France and Great Britain." Brigidier General Albertus W. Catlin and his fellow marines were among the first American soldiers sent across to France in World War One and within months they were thrown into the thick of the action. As the Germans made a last ditch attempt to break through allied lines and capture Paris it was the marines who stood in their way. In the bloody days of June 1918 Catlin and his small band of marines fought ferociously against the Germans, utilising all the training that they had been through and showing the true metal of the marines. It is a period that has gone down as one of the greatest achievements of the United States Marines Corps. This fascinating history of the marines and their involvement in World War One was written during Catlin's recovery period after he had been shot by a sniper during the sixth day of the Battle of Belleau Wood. "The story of the marines in France is told with authority and interest."-- Booklist "It is one of the books about the American war effort which is well worth keeping as well as reading." -- Outlook "A well-written and complete account." -- Library Bulletin Albertus W. Catlin (1868-1933) was a career soldier who had received the Medal of Honor for leading the 3rd Marine Regiment at Vera Cruz, Mexico and for displaying "distinguished conduct in battle". He published "With the Help of God and a Few Marines in 1919.
