Book Description
This is the first book in the field of mouse genetics to provide comprehensive and standardized methods for the characterization of laboratory mice. The editor is Director of the German Mouse Clinic and member of the Project Committee of the German National Genome Research Network and provides here a brief introduction to the mouse as a model for diseases and functional analysis of genes and proteins. Throughout, he focuses on the characterization of mouse models using the latest phenotyping methods, with the different areas presented in a clearly structured and easily accessible manner.

Mouse as a Model Organism

Mouse as a Model Organism PDF Author: Cord Brakebusch
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400707509
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 165

Book Description
Cell culture based research is important for our understanding of biological processes at the cellular and molecular level. Using this approach, the previous decades have produced a wealth of mechanistic information in all areas of biomedical research. Such in vitro research, however, lacks the complexity of in vivo investigations, where many different cell types interact with each other in a normal, three-dimensional environment, with normal levels of cytokines and growth factors. Furthermore, complex human diseases, such as cancer, diabetes or chronic inflammation, can only be modeled in vivo. Due to its small size, its short reproduction time, and the possibility to introduce specific gene mutations, the mouse has become the favourite mammalian model organism to study in vivo function of genes during development and in disease. This book combines review articles on selected subjects presented at the symposium “Mouse as a Model Organism – From Animals to Cells”, held in Rovaniemi, Finland, 2009. Among other topics, high-throughput phenotyping of mouse mutants, mouse phenotypes dependent on nature and nuture, and a spectrum of in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro methods to study cancer in mice are described. This book will give an excellent introduction to scientists interested in the use of mice as a model to understand complex biological questions in the post-genomic era. It will highlight the possibilities, but also discuss the current problems and shortcomings, to give a realistic view of the current state-of-art in this fascinating field of biomedical research.

Pathology of Genetically Engineered and Other Mutant Mice

Book Description
An updated and comprehensive reference to pathology in every organ system in genetically modified mice The newly revised and thoroughly updated Second Edition of Pathology of Genetically Engineered and Other Mutant Mice delivers a comprehensive resource for pathologists and biomedical scientists tasked with identifying and understanding pathologic changes in genetically modified mice. The book is organized by body system, includes descriptions and explanations of a wide range of findings, as well as hundreds of color photographs illustrating both common and rare lesions that may be found in genetically engineered and wild type mice. The book is written by experienced veterinary and medical pathologists working in veterinary medical colleges, medical colleges, and research institutes. Covering the latest discoveries in mouse pathology resulting from advancements in biotechnology research over the last 30 years, this singular and accessible resource is a must-read for veterinary and medical pathologists and researchers working with genetically engineered and other mice. Readers will also benefit from: A thorough introduction to mouse pathology and mouse genetic nomenclature, as well as databases useful for analysis of mutant mice An exploration of concepts related to validating animal models, including the Cinderella Effect Practical discussions of basic necropsy methods and grading lesions for computational analyses Concise diagnostic approaches to the respiratory tract, the oral cavity and GI tract, the cardiovascular system, the liver and pancreas, the skeletal system, and other tissues As a one-stop and up to date reference on mouse pathology, Pathology of Genetically Engineered and Other Mutant Mice is an essential book for veterinary and medical pathologists, as well as for scientists, researchers, and toxicologists whose work brings them into contact with genetically modified mice.

Behavioral Genetics of the Mouse: Volume 1, Genetics of Behavioral Phenotypes

Behavioral Genetics of the Mouse: Volume 1, Genetics of Behavioral Phenotypes PDF Author: Wim E. Crusio
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107355575
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
The first volume in the new Cambridge Handbooks in Behavioral Genetics series, Behavioral Genetics of the Mouse provides baseline information on normal behaviors, essential in both the design of experiments using genetically modified or pharmacologically treated animals and in the interpretation and analyses of the results obtained. The book offers a comprehensive overview of the genetics of naturally occurring variation in mouse behavior, from perception and spontaneous behaviors such as exploration, aggression, social interactions and motor behaviors, to reinforced behaviors such as the different types of learning. Also included are numerous examples of potential experimental problems, which will aid and guide researchers trying to troubleshoot their own studies. A lasting reference, the thorough and comprehensive reviews offer an easy entrance into the extensive literature in this field, and will prove invaluable to students and specialists alike.

The Molecular and Cellular Basis of Retinal Diseases

The Molecular and Cellular Basis of Retinal Diseases PDF Author: Steven J. Pittler
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039366548
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
There are more than 300 genes that have been identified which carry mutations that cause various forms of retinal dysfunction and degeneration, making the study of retinal diseases a subject of high relevance. In this compendium of original and review articles, many of the diseases and pathways associated with disorders of the retina are examined using animal models, to provide the reader with a good overview of current retinal research. Within this volume, you will find research reports on many of the most prominent retinal disorders, such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), age-related macular degeneration (AMD), choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). We hope that the work presented here will stimulate new ideas and lead to effective treatments for retinal diseases.
